Who is Qualified to Treat Hand and Upper Extremity Injuries?
A skilled hand therapist has developed proficiency in the management of disorders of the hand and upper extremity and can assist hand surgeons in making sound clinical decisions which will help benefit the patient. Either a physical or occupational therapist that has been licensed for 5 years and has spent at least 4000 hours treating injuries related to the upper extremity. After they have met those criteria, they are eligible to sit for a credentialing exam to become a certified hand therapist.

Paul Brach has been practicing physical therapy for the past 16 years and has been board certified in hand therapy for 10 years. A recognized leader in the field of hand therapy, Paul has authored numerous articles about rehabilitation of the upper extremity, and has lectured at national and international conferences. In 2003, Paul was the recipient of the distinguished Vargas International Hand Therapist Teaching Award by the American Association of Hand Surgery.
